The Amorepacific Museum of Art (APMA), under the directorship of Jeon Seung-chang, is set to unveil its latest special exhibition titled 'APMA, Chapter Five – From the APMA Collection'.
Running from April 1 to August 2, this exhibition will showcase works from over 40 local and international contemporary artists, offering a rich cross-section of modern artistic expression.
Highlighting the work of both emerging and established artists, the exhibition aims to examine and contextualize key themes ranging from life and death to femininity and the relationship between mythology and nature.
Among the notable contributors are influential figures like Kiki Smith, who explores existential themes through her provocative art; British artist Rose Wylie, who revitalizes the language of painting through everyday imagery; Carol Bove, recognized for expanding the materiality and structure of sculpture using industrial materials; and Gala Porras-Kim, whose work delves into the layers of time embedded in objects and places, transcending conventional narratives of human-centric history.
In addition to international works, the exhibition will spotlight prominent figures in Korean contemporary art.
Notably, the pioneering video artist Nam June Paik will feature an impressive installation, 'Kon-Tiki', alongside a major piece, 'TV Vertical Flower', which marks its first exhibition in over two decades.
Additionally, attendees will encounter a new work by Yang Haegyu, 'Overlapping Corners – Resounding Orange and Blue Square', and a key piece titled 'The Secret Sharer' by Lee Bul, which critically examines the anxieties and fissures inherent within modern civilization.
The exhibition will display approximately 80 works across varied mediums including painting, photography, sculpture, and installation, illuminating the rich and diverse artistic languages that have evolved within different cultural and historical contexts.
This presentation not only reflects the trajectory of Korean contemporary art—from monochrome painting to a proliferation of diversified media and topics—but also situates it within the broader narrative of international contemporary art movements and intergenerational transitions.
To enhance visitor engagement, the APMA will offer a series of programs designed to deepen the exhibition experience, including 'With Curator', which allows patrons to view the exhibition alongside curators, and 'With Curator Professional', a more in-depth exploration tailored for art professionals.
Through these initiatives, the museum aims to cultivate a deeper appreciation for both the exhibition and its extensive collection, thereby contributing to the ongoing discourse in the global art community.
