On April 11, 2023, the Intellectual Property Office (IPO), led by Commissioner Kim Yong-seon, announced a decisive strategy aimed at bolstering support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) facing challenges exacerbated by soaring oil prices linked to geopolitical tensions, particularly due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
The newly approved supplementary budget of 9.5 billion won (approximately $7.5 million) will facilitate a robust government initiative focused on safeguarding South Korean exporters from the increasing threat of counterfeit goods.
Under this strategic plan, the South Korean government will undertake the registration of a nationally certified trademark in key export markets where the risk of counterfeit distribution is notably high.
This certification will allow companies to voluntarily affix these government-sanctioned marks to their products, thus clearly demonstrating that they are genuine Korean goods.
Leveraging advanced product authentication technologies integrated within these national trademarks, overseas consumers will be empowered to verify the authenticity of products instantly using their smartphones.
This initiative is designed not only to protect the intellectual property rights of South Korean businesses but also to enable real-time monitoring of counterfeit goods by the government.
When faced with counterfeits, the government plans a coordinated response involving joint investigations and enforcement actions with local authorities, aiming to prevent counterfeit goods from entering the marketplace.
The IPO is set to expedite the development and domestic and international filing of the national certification trademark, aiming to officially implement the program by the second half of 2023.
This anticipated rollout represents a critical measure that underscores the government's commitment to mitigating the dual pressure of rising production costs and counterfeit proliferation impacting SMEs involved in export activities.
Commissioner Kim Yong-seon emphasized, "The rapid execution of this budget is geared towards producing tangible outcomes that can be felt on the ground, offering real protection to our struggling exporters in the face of adversity.
" As the global beauty and consumer goods markets continue to evolve, this innovative certification system could serve as a model for similar initiatives worldwide, potentially influencing regulatory frameworks and consumer confidence in brand authenticity across markets.
