Aekyung Industries announced on the 10th that its proprietary ceramide-like ingredient, AK3, has been officially registered as a new cosmetic ingredient with China's National Medical Products Administration (NMPA). This registration not only fulfills a critical regulatory requirement for utilizing AK3 in the Chinese cosmetics market but also reinforces Aekyung's competitive edge in global materials innovation.

The NMPA mandates rigorous scrutiny for any new ingredient used for the first time in cosmetics. This includes substantial requirements for physical and chemical properties, manufacturing processes, and comprehensive safety assessments, including toxicity evaluations and allergy tests. Given the high costs and lengthy review timelines associated with foreign raw materials, many domestic companies find it challenging to navigate this landscape.

While the NMPA reform in 2021 eased some registration barriers, the actual completion rates remain low, with a total of 444 new ingredient registrations recorded up to April 2024. Of these, only 66 were sourced from outside China, putting Aekyung’s successful registration among just a handful from South Korean companies, highlighting both the complexity and rarity of such achievements.

Significantly, AK3 stands as the fifth substance to be registered following the 2021 regulatory changes, specifically being the first ingredient to have its skin moisturization efficacy demonstrated in the Chinese market. This accomplishment serves as a benchmark for South Korean companies eager to penetrate this highly competitive landscape.

Aekyung Industries systematically validated the safety and effectiveness of AK3 to meet the NMPA’s stringent criteria, successfully conducting evaluations through designated local institutes. This strategic adherence to regulatory requirements exemplifies the company’s sophistication in navigating compliance challenges.

The registration acts as a catalyst for Aekyung’s ambitions in the Chinese market, particularly as there is a growing demand for skincare solutions that enhance the skin barrier, provide moisturization, and minimize irritation. The rising interest in ceramide and ceramide-like components positions AK3 for integration into a diverse range of products aimed at meeting these consumer needs.

According to Kim Han-young, from Aekyung’s Cosmetic Research Institute, “The registration of AK3 as a new ingredient by the NMPA symbolizes a recognition of Aekyung’s proprietary material technology and quality in the global arena.” This underscores the potential for differentiated ingredient research and regulatory responsiveness to bolster competitiveness in the K-beauty sector moving forward.
