Wingate Korea Co., Ltd.'s Son Sung-min was appointed as a member of the Beauty Industry Special Committee under the National Bio Innovation Committee on the 10th, contributing to policy discussions aimed at elevating K-Beauty as a bio-based future growth industry.
The National Bio Innovation Committee, officially launched on April 16, serves as a top-tier governance body for bio policies across various ministries, coordinating previously fragmented initiatives and scrutinizing critical agendas including policy, regulation, and investment.
Since its inception, the committee has systematically convened three subcommittees focused on investment strategy, technological innovation, and industrial promotion. On May 21, it held the inaugural meetings for both the Beauty Industry Special Committee and the Regulatory Special Committee to kickstart comprehensive discussions on critical bio policy issues.
The first meeting of the Beauty Industry Special Committee was specifically designed to outline policy directions for nurturing K-Beauty as a bio-based industry. Key topics included technological development to enhance global competitiveness, establishing an industrial framework, supporting exports, and improving regulations, alongside reviews of phased growth strategies for the beauty industry.
Attendees included key industry leaders such as Vice Chairman Won Hee-mok of the National Bio Innovation Committee, Chairman Son Ji-hoon of Pharma Research, and various representatives from noteworthy organizations including Kolmar Korea and Cosmax. They collectively engaged in dialogue regarding the industry's challenges and future trajectories.
Son Sung-min, noted for his expertise in export diversification, regulatory responses, and safety assessments, emphasized the critical role of government support in addressing the challenges faced by export firms amidst regulatory changes in major K-Beauty markets. He articulated that the beauty sector is evolving from a mere consumer goods industry into a future growth sector combining biotechnology, dermatological science, safety evaluations, ingredient innovations, and digital healthcare capabilities.
In alignment with this evolution, the Beauty Industry Special Committee is focusing on establishing a robust regulatory framework, providing export support, leveraging industrial data, and enhancing functional and efficacy evaluations to facilitate domestic enterprises’ entry into global markets.
Wingate Korea specializes in consulting services that assist domestic companies in navigating international regulatory requirements, including compliance with U.S. FDA and EU cosmetic regulations, and entry strategies for Chinese and ASEAN markets. Son’s involvement in the committee is expected to inject practical regulatory expertise to help strengthen K-Beauty's global competitiveness through effective policy discourse.
Son stated, "For K-Beauty to maintain its competitive edge internationally, an integrated approach from the product development stage—addressing safety, efficacy, ingredient sourcing, labeling, claims, and export country regulations—is imperative. I aim to contribute to policy discussions to ensure the domestic beauty sector proactively adapts to global regulatory changes based on industry experience." The National Bio Innovation Committee plans to collect insights from industry fields through its various subcommittees and special committees, working towards drafting a comprehensive 'Korea Bio Innovation Growth Strategy' that encompasses regulatory improvements and investment initiatives.
