LG Household & Health Care announced on the 10th that it successfully developed a large-scale, single-material packaging pouch that enhances recyclability while improving durability through research collaboration with LG Chem. This innovation replaces complex materials that previously hindered recycling processes with a polyethylene (PE) single material, simplifying the separation and recycling process.
The existing multi-material packaging pouches were often constructed with various materials to enhance durability, resulting in increased thickness that complicated recycling efforts. In fact, composite pouches received a 'fair' recycling rating, whereas single-material pouches were classified as 'excellent.' Thus, LG Household & Health Care pioneered the development of PE single-material pouches in the domestic household goods sector in 2023, applying this technology to its 'Safe Natural Mineral Kitchen Detergent Refill 1L,' and is currently using it for the 'Method Kitchen Detergent Refill 1L' product.
Recently, LG Household & Health Care achieved further advancements by developing a packaging pouch with enhanced durability suitable for 2L capacity while maintaining the single-material structure. Notably, the ultra-thin packaging film material 'UNIQABLE™' was utilized, achieving a world-class thickness of 14μm, showcasing differentiated technical capability.
UNIQABLE maintains physical properties equivalent to traditional composite packaging films while enhancing recyclability, thereby meeting dual demands for sustainability and high functionality. Earlier this month, LG Chem showcased packaging materials using UNIQABLE at the Interpack 2026, Europe's largest packaging exhibition held in Düsseldorf, garnering significant global attention.
LG Household & Health Care is actively exploring diverse applications for the newly developed packaging pouch and is solidifying its plastic circular economy strategy through R&D focused on eco-friendly packaging from an ESG management perspective. A company representative stated, "We will focus on developing eco-friendly solutions that enhance both sustainability and user experience by expanding the availability of easily recyclable packages."
This strategic move not only signals LG Household & Health Care's commitment to sustainability but also reflects broader industry trends favoring eco-conscious practices. As consumers increasingly seek brands that resonate with their values—particularly in the beauty and personal care sector—this initiative positions LG Household & Health Care as a forward-thinking leader in integrating sustainable practices into its product lines.
