Sulwhasoo Seeks Participants for 'Sulwha Project Season 3' Focused on Traditional Arts
Luxury beauty brand Sulwhasoo announced on the 21st that it will be recruiting participants for its student creative program, 'Sulwha Project Season 3', from April 21 to May 5. This initiative focuses on the theme of traditional Korean performance art 'Talchum' and encourages university and graduate students to engage in the planning, production, and exhibition processes.
The 'Sulwha Project' serves as a creative support program aimed at reinterpreting Korean traditional culture through contemporary lenses. This approach is strategically positioned to expand the reach and relevance of traditional values by collaborating with emerging creators who can offer fresh perspectives.
This season, the focus on 'Talchum', characterized by humor, satire, and freedom of expression, offers vast potential for diverse creative outputs, including performance art, video, textiles, crafts, and spatial design. Notably, the program emphasizes documenting and sharing the creative process, transitioning beyond purely final product development to foster greater engagement with the audience.
By selecting 'Talchum' as this season's theme, Sulwhasoo signals its intention to reinterpret tradition with a broader and more dynamic approach. The integrative nature of 'Talchum', combining dance, music, masks, and narrative, allows for innovative interpretations that resonate with contemporary sensibilities, positioning traditional culture as engaging and trendy.
The selection process is open to both undergraduate and graduate students, with applications accepted individually. A total of 16 participants will be selected to form teams of four to collaborate on the project. Each selected participant will receive production funding and activity support for approximately three months, with awards presented to outstanding teams. The final creations are set to be showcased at Sulwhasoo's Bukchon flagship store in August.
A representative from Sulwhasoo emphasized that the 'Sulwha Project' acts as a creative platform that extends tradition into modern culture rather than relegating it to a relic of the past. The initiative aims to continuously discover and amplify the potential of traditional Korean culture through the eyes of young creators.
Applications can be submitted through the official Sulwhasoo website, where candidates can download application forms and access more detailed information about the program. Since its inception with 'Sulwha Culture Night' in 2006, Sulwhasoo has consistently sought to merge traditional craftsmanship with contemporary relevance through various cultural initiatives, and this year, the program has been redefined as the 'Sulwha Project' to strengthen collaborations and support for emerging creatives.
