South Korea Unveils 2026 Technology Commercialization Support Package for SMEs

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups (Minister Han Seong-sook) announced on April 27 that it is implementing the "2026 Technology Commercialization Support Package Phase II" to facilitate the commercialization of technology among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and startups. This initiative is a follow-up to the Phase I announcement made in February, introducing a new track aimed specifically at startups through supplementary budgeting.

The Technology Commercialization Package aims to prevent market performance disruptions caused by cash flow issues for SMEs that have acquired excellent technology through government research and development (R&D) support programs. It is designed to provide optimal commercialization programs to generate tangible results, including increased exports and revenue, effectively supporting SMEs in achieving their business goals.

Under this program, SMEs will receive tailored commercialization services designed by industry experts based on a self-created roadmap, functioning in a physician-like advisory role. Furthermore, specialized institutions will be selected to offer customized programs, ensuring that SMEs have access to expert guidance in their commercialization efforts.

Eligible participants are SMEs that have completed or acquired technology development after January 1, 2023. They will be supported through four specific tracks: government R&D excellent projects, technology trading platforms, regulation innovation R&D linkage, and R&D performing startups. This strategic segmentation aims to provide targeted assistance to various segments of the SME landscape.

The initiative expects to select around 150 companies, offering up to 150 million KRW in follow-up commercialization subsidies for R&D projects. This financial support is anticipated to act as a launchpad for companies possessing technologies ready for commercialization, facilitating their rapid growth and market entry.

SMEs interested in applying for the Technology Commercialization Package can access the announcement from April 27 on the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and the Korea Institute of Startup and Entrepreneurship Development websites. Applications will be accepted online from May 11 to May 26 through the integrated management system for small and medium-sized enterprise technology development.
