Increase in Export Vouchers for Logistics, Exhibitions, and Certifications
KOTRA announced on April 7 that it has selected 155 companies for its emergency support voucher program, with an additional 534 identified on May 6. This initiative aims to mitigate the impact of uncertainties in trade due to increased tariffs from the U.S. and ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The initiative underscores a strategic pivot towards bolstering export resilience among South Korean businesses, particularly in the beauty segment.
The program, driven by additional funding of 25.5 billion KRW allocated for companies affected by the regional conflicts, signals a targeted effort to sustain export activities in volatile markets. Notably, cosmetics and beauty goods businesses represent 25.6% of the newly selected companies, indicating strong engagement among consumer packaged goods firms struggling to adapt to evolving trade barriers.
According to analytics conducted by KOTRA, export voucher utilization is shifting; logistics allocations constitute 33.4% of use cases, with overseas exhibition participation at 17.6%, and overseas certification acquisition at 12.6%. Financially, exhibitions account for 32.2% of voucher cash flows, followed by logistics at 23.4% and advertising at 9.4%. This shift reveals a transition from traditional exhibition and product design expenditures towards more urgent logistical and certification needs, reflecting changes in export market dynamics.
The rise in logistical demands stems from increased costs attributed to U.S. tariff policies and Middle East conflicts, which have intensified the financial strain on exporters. Moreover, the global proliferation of non-tariff barriers like overseas certifications necessitates adjustments in funding allocations, as companies strive for compliance in diverse markets.
Additionally, the global rise of K-beauty and e-commerce platforms like Meta, Google, and Amazon has led to a surge in promotional voucher usage for brand awareness and online marketing content creation. This trend highlights a crucial pivot where digital initiatives complement traditional export strategies, providing avenues for increased brand visibility in saturated markets.
In response to these insights, KOTRA is conducting a nationwide series of "Export Voucher Introduction Meetings" starting on May 12, focusing on major cities to enhance understanding and utilization of vouchers for exhibitions, logistics, certifications, and advertising. This outreach aims to educate businesses on maximizing the efficacy of available funds, which is vital for companies navigating a complex landscape.
The meetings on May 12 and 15 attracted over 250 participants, indicating significant interest in logistics and certification voucher usage. One participant noted, “Initially, we intended to allocate vouchers solely for export logistics, but after the briefing, we plan to also invest in certification and advertising.” KOTRA's president, Kang Kyung-seong, remarked on the increasing complexity of export strategies as companies adapt to an uncertain trade environment, reinforcing their commitment to streamline voucher use and expand service offerings tailored to evolving business needs.
