K-Beauty Expands Global Footprint through Douyin Collaboration
KOTRA announced on the 10th that it has moved to enhance the export capacity of K-consumer goods by collaborating with Douyin, China's largest short-form video and e-commerce platform. Following a successful seminar earlier this year that validated the cooperation needs between Douyin and K-beauty companies, a significant buying delegation consisting of over 100 members including sourcing leads, merchandise directors, vendors, and influencers engaged in B2B consultations with various K-beauty firms.
On May 21, KOTRA hosted the 'K-Beauty Expo Korea' alongside the 'Douyin Pinpoint Consultation Event,' which integrated online platforms, influencer marketing, live commerce, and reverse logistics into their export marketing initiatives. This layered approach suggests a pivot towards a more cohesive and dynamic export strategy aimed at tapping into evolving consumer behaviors within the Chinese market.
Recently, consumer behavior trends in China indicate a shift from search-centric online purchasing to a model increasingly predicated on content-driven live commerce. Douyin dominates this space, capturing 32% market share in the K-beauty reverse logistics arena, implying substantial growth potential for Korean brands aiming to capitalize on this engaging shopping experience.
In response to this rising demand, KOTRA held a seminar in January titled 'Leveraging Douyin for Reverse Logistics into China' and opened a 'K-Consumer Goods Matching Center' in Qingdao in April. This strategic alignment is integral for strengthening K-beauty’s presence in the lucrative Chinese market, and the continued collaboration signals long-term revenue strategies focused on optimizing visibility and market share.
The recent consultation event conducted by KOTRA and KINTEX featured over 100 K-beauty companies and focused on educating attendees about the potential of entering the Douyin marketplace. Following a live commerce session hosted by influencers, instant sales worth approximately 400,000 yuan (around 8 million KRW) were recorded, showcasing the efficacy of real-time consumer engagement strategies.
A participant from a cosmetics exporting company stated, “This opportunity allowed us to learn about effective live commerce marketing strategies in collaboration with local influencers, providing valuable consumer insights that will enhance our product strategy.” This reflects a shift in focus towards capturing real-time consumer feedback, which is critical for effective product positioning and development.
A sourcing representative from Douyin noted the strong popularity of K-beauty products within China and emphasized plans for gradual partnership expansion with promising Korean brands. This commitment is pivotal as it indicates both trust and investment in the quality of K-beauty products, further driving demand for established and emerging brands alike.
Currently, KOTRA operates 'K-Consumer Goods Logistics Desks' at ten overseas centers including Qingdao, aiming to enhance efficiency in export logistics, customs, labeling, and reverse logistics services. Looking forward, KOTRA plans to invite 200 international buyers, including Douyin representatives, to the largest 'K-Beauty Expo Korea' from October 15 to 17. This event is expected to bolster K-consumer goods exports significantly and strengthen trade relationships.
KOTRA’s Qingdao trade center head, Kim Yun-hee, remarked, “The evolution of consumer goods distribution in China is quickly transitioning from a reliance on offline channels to a content and platform-centric model. By systematically aligning with local platforms and influencers, we aim to maximize the export impact of K-consumer goods within the Chinese market.”
