Cosmax Recognized for Innovations in Skin Microbiome Research

Cosmax announced on the 20th that it received a commendation from the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy at the 61st Invention Day ceremony, recognizing its contributions to the commercialization of skin microbiome cosmetics and its establishment of a virtuous cycle in technology, academia, and industry.

Since 2019, Cosmax has led the industry by successfully launching the world’s first skin microbiome cosmetics, utilizing the newly discovered microorganism EPI-7. This breakthrough showcases the company’s ability to transition scientific discoveries into commercial success, thereby enhancing its competitive edge.

Cosmax has redefined microbiomes as a core technological element in cosmetic formulations, paving the way for the evolution of the beauty industry from a chemical-centric model to a bio-based value-added industry. By successfully developing eco-friendly emulsion technologies that replace traditional chemical surfactants, Cosmax presents a strategic shift towards sustainability in cosmetic production.

The extensive intellectual property portfolio that Cosmax has amassed, with 124 patent applications and 67 registered patents, has reinforced its academic foundation while reducing reliance on foreign technologies. This positions K-beauty not only as a competitive force in domestic markets but also as a potential leader in global markets.

With ongoing collaboration with leading universities and research institutions, Cosmax is actively elevating its technological capabilities, focusing on the international consumer market by expanding its research efforts on skin microbiomes in regions such as the United States and China.

As a result, the skin microbiome technology integrated into Cosmax's products has gained recognition globally, reflecting its competitive advantage in North America, Europe, and China. The company is also engaged in joint research efforts on eco-friendly nano-emulsion technologies with some of the world’s largest cosmetic firms.

This recognition of Cosmax’s skin microbiome successes has been complemented by awards, including the upcoming 2024 Korea Technology Award, further cementing its status as an innovation leader in the beauty industry.

The evolution of skin microbiome research into a multi-platform approach, including AI skin diagnostics through the FaceLink platform and machine learning algorithms like Skiminet, signifies a transformative shift towards data-driven digital healthcare in the cosmetics sector.

Dr. Kang Seung-hyun, head of Cosmax's R&I unit, emphasized that this award reflects over 15 years of dedicated research on skin microbiomes. He committed to leveraging the group's strengths in foundational technologies and product development to maintain competitive advantages for K-beauty's biotechnological innovations in the global marketplace.
