LG Household & Health Care Launches Innovative Eco-Friendly Packaging Solutions

LG Household & Health Care announced on the 10th that it has successfully developed a recyclable, durable single-material pouch through joint research with LG Chem. This new packaging solution replaces complex multi-material refill pouches, traditionally posing recycling challenges, with a simplified polyethylene (PE) single-material format aimed at enhancing the recycling process, which could yield greater operational efficiencies for retailers and distributors.

The conventional packaging pouches were made with multiple materials to enhance durability, leading to increased thickness and complicating recycling efforts. Currently, multi-material pouches receive a 'moderate' recycling grade, whereas single-material options are graded as 'excellent.' This design shift not only aligns with growing consumer demands for sustainability but also positions LG Household & Health Care as a pioneer in adopting eco-efficient practices within the domestic consumer goods landscape.

In 2023, LG Household & Health Care became the first in the local household item sector to launch a 1-liter refill pouch for its 'Safe Natural Mineral Dishwashing Liquid,' showcasing the potential for cross-category applicability of this packaging technology. The recent adoption of this sustainable package in the 'Method Dishwashing Liquid Refill 1L' indicates a strategic shift towards broader product applications and brand differentiation in a competitive market.

Further advancements have led to a new packaging solution capable of supporting a higher capacity of 2 liters, while maintaining the integrity of single-material use. Employing UNIQABLE™, an ultra-thin film material achieving an industry-leading thickness of 14μm, underscores LG's technological prowess while elevating the recyclability rates compared to traditional materials.

The UNIQABLE™ material maintains the essential properties of existing multi-material films, effectively enhancing recyclability while satisfying the dual criteria of sustainability and high functionality. LG Chem recently exhibited this innovative packaging at the Interpack 2026 exhibition in Düsseldorf, drawing global attention and underscoring its potential for international market expansion.

LG Household & Health Care is actively exploring diverse applications for this new pouch and is crystallizing its strategy for a plastic circular economy through eco-friendly packaging R&D from an ESG management perspective.
