Amorepacific Discovers Key Substance for Youthful Skin through Microbiome Research

Amorepacific announced on the 10th that its R&I Center has discovered key substances associated with youthful and healthy skin ecosystems through an integrated analysis of skin microbiomes and surface metabolites. This research outcome was published in the online edition of the international microbiology journal, 'International Microbiology,' in April. The study titled, 'Integrated analysis of age-related microbiome and metabolites reveals youth-associated metabolites in young Korean women’s skin,' provides a foundational understanding of how microbiomes contribute to skin health.

The company has been focusing on the significant impact of skin-residing microorganisms on skin health and aging, accumulating research capabilities by analyzing changes in microbial composition and its correlation with skin barrier, immunity, and aging. This paper reflects the integration of microbiome studies and skin surface metabolite analysis, marking a crucial step in understanding skin health from a holistic perspective.

Through an analysis involving Korean women, the study identified phenyllactic acid (PLA) as a metabolite commonly elevated in environments of youthful and healthy skin. Notably, cell experiments confirmed that PLA plays a pivotal role in collagen production, fostering skin elasticity while inhibiting collagen-degrading enzymes. These findings underline the direct influence that microbial-generated substances have on managing skin aging.

Furthermore, the research shifts the existing conventional approach to skin aging, which primarily focuses on chronological age, to a more nuanced understanding that considers both the functionality of skin microbiomes and the substances they generate. This research confirms that skin microorganisms are not merely passive inhabitants but active partners defining skin health status. Based on these findings, Amorepacific expects to leverage this research in developing personalized skin diagnostics and microbiome-informed functional materials.

Amorepacific plans to expand its research on next-generation longevity materials that can help cultivate skin that appears healthier and younger than its biological age. The technologies related to the microbiome-derived metabolites identified in this study are anticipated to contribute broadly to product development within the skincare segment.
