The Ministry of SMEs and Startups announced on June 16 that the export value of four promising consumer goods among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) reached $9.58 billion from January to May 2026, reflecting a robust 16.4% year-over-year increase. This figure significantly surpasses the average export growth rate of SMEs overall, which stood at 9.3% during the same period, underscoring the cosmetics sector's pivotal role in propelling SME export growth.

A closer examination reveals that the cosmetics sector is increasingly representing 18.4% of total SME exports, with the number of exporting firms up by 5.2% compared to the previous year, totaling approximately 27,000 companies. This performance indicates that cosmetics have emerged as a cornerstone for SME export strategies, providing critical support for overall growth during turbulent economic conditions.

The export landscape showcases a strengthening of traditional markets such as the United States, China, and Japan, alongside notable expansions into Europe (+39.6%) and Latin America (+66.1%). This diversification illustrates that Korean SMEs are leveraging product excellence to navigate challenging global conditions, including geopolitical tensions.

Specifically, K-beauty continues to break records, solidifying its position as the leading driver of these positive export figures. The sector's increasing recognition for high-quality skincare and makeup products, especially in North America and Asia, complements its notable success in Europe (+61.1%) and Latin America (+153.5%). This reinforces K-beauty’s competitive positioning amidst a crowded global market.

In addition, the apparel sector, particularly K-fashion, has seen a 13.6% increase in exports. The growing interest in emerging designer brands and sports casual wear, fueled by cultural phenomena such as K-pop and street fashion, has positioned SMEs well to capitalize on recent trends. With strong demand from markets like China (43.4% share) and significant growth in Hong Kong (+31.9%) and Taiwan (+20.0%), the K-fashion segment is expanding its export footprint effectively.

Meanwhile, the agricultural and marine products category also generated a notable 16.0% increase in exports, led by seaweed products, while fish exports have surged by 43.4%, especially in Europe (+73.3%) and Africa (+99.3%). This performance aligns with broader consumer trends toward diverse and sustainable food sources.

Deputy Minister Roh Yong-seok emphasized that despite rising global protectionism and geopolitical challenges, SMEs are breaking new records through diversification and innovation. K-beauty, in particular, represents a successful model of how SMEs can thrive in international markets by harmonizing innovative products with established corporate supply chains. The ministry plans to enhance supportive policies to extend K-beauty’s success formula to other sectors, including food and fashion, representing a strategic opportunity for investors and distributors to engage with a rapidly evolving ecosystem.
