KOTRA and Public Procurement Agency Collaborate to Enhance Export Support for Innovative Products
Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) announced on the 16th that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Public Procurement Agency to bolster support for domestic SMEs aiming to penetrate international public procurement markets.
This collaboration builds on a partnership that has been in place since 1995, where both organizations have jointly hosted the Global Public Procurement Market (GPPM) Export Counseling Conference each year. Such initiatives not only facilitate meetings between domestic vendors and foreign clients but also provide valuable opportunities for exporting innovation-driven products. Beginning in 2024, KOTRA will support international demonstrations of innovative products through a pilot purchasing program designed to foster exports.
The recent agreement introduces new components aimed specifically at enhancing practical training for exporters related to the overseas validation of innovative products. By providing this training, the goal is to convert pilot usages into tangible export results, which is critical for revenue generation and market validation.
Under this agreement, both KOTRA and the Public Procurement Agency plan to extend their existing initiatives, which include conducting export counseling sessions, facilitating seminars, and sharing procurement market information. A significant focus will also be placed on collaborative efforts to create pathways for innovative products in the international procurement landscape.
KOTRA operates 13 Global Innovation Procurement Desks to further support SMEs in exporting to international public procurement markets, successfully disseminating over 200 overseas bidding opportunities each year. This enables firms to engage effectively in international tendering processes, significantly enhancing their competitive edge.
KOTRA President Kyung-sung Kang emphasized that while the international procurement market can pose entry challenges, successful navigation offers substantial advantages in terms of transaction stability and trust. He stated that through collaboration with the Public Procurement Agency, there is a commitment to increase participation opportunities in overseas validation projects for domestic innovation firms, ultimately leading to increased export success.
This partnership signals a proactive approach to enhancing the international competitiveness of South Korean SMEs, particularly in the beauty sector, where innovation and quality are pivotal. It highlights the potential for integrating educational initiatives in procurement practices to facilitate smoother market entry and sustained international engagement.
