Amorepacific Foundation Awards Research Grants to Emerging Scholars

On June 17, the Amorepacific Foundation, chaired by Seo Kyung-bae, held a ceremony at its headquarters in Yongsan, Seoul, to award research grants to three emerging scholars under the 'Jangwon (粧源) Humanities Scholar Program'. This initiative reflects the foundation's commitment to fostering foundational academic research and nurturing talent in the humanities, a vision stemming from the legacy of Amorepacific's founder, Jangwon Seo Sung-hwan.

The Jangwon Humanities Scholar Program, active since 2020, is specifically designed for researchers who have obtained their doctoral degrees within the past five years. This year, approximately 90 applications were submitted in February, evaluated by a panel of established scholars in the humanities. After a rigorous selection process involving document reviews and interviews, three scholars were chosen: Kim Min-young from Seoul National University's Department of Korean Language and Literature, Namgoong Seung-won from the Department of History at Seoul National University, and Hong Ji-soo from Brown University's Department of History.

The selected researchers will receive a monthly grant of 4 million won for the next four years, enabling them to pursue independent research topics of their choice without the requirement for specific projects, such as papers or publications. This funding model intentionally diverges from traditional research support programs by emphasizing the potential of early-career researchers and providing them with a stable environment in which to focus on self-directed study.

Attending the awards ceremony were Seo Kyung-bae, alongside board members including Professor Lee Seok-jae and Professor Min Eun-kyung from Seoul National University, who presented the certificates and encouraged the researchers. Professor Lee Seok-jae, the chair of the planning committee, emphasized that supporting researchers in establishing a stable foundation is crucial to fostering a pure basic academic ecosystem. He stated, “We will continue to provide support at the foundation level to ensure that socially significant research can be carried out continuously.”

Strategically, this initiative not only enhances Amorepacific's reputation as a leader in corporate responsibility but also positions the foundation as a pivotal player in sustaining the academic and cultural landscape.
