The Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced on the 10th that the Business Survey Index (BSI) for Q3 2026 has improved marginally to 80, a 4-point increase from the previous quarter's index of 76. This shift is largely attributed to positive trends in semiconductor and electronics exports, as well as companies' strategies to navigate uncertainties related to the Middle Eastern conflict.

The BSI serves as a critical indicator, with values exceeding 100 indicating a positive outlook among surveyed firms. In this report, the semiconductor sector outperformed by recording a stellar 113, suggesting that more companies anticipate a brighter Q3 compared to Q2. This could translate into increased capital investment within the sector, positively impacting long-term growth potential.

Additionally, the cosmetics sector has also showcased robust export performance, reaching a BSI of 100, signaling stability amidst fluctuations. This suggests heightened brand retention mechanisms and ongoing loyalty from international consumers, thereby reinforcing the sector's position in both local and global markets.

In contrast, sectors such as non-metallic minerals, which fell to 61 due to declines in construction demand caused by seasonal weather, indicate that not all market segments are benefiting equally from the current landscape. Retailers and distributors must be cognizant of these shifts to align their supply chain strategies effectively.

While larger corporations have shown improvement, as evidenced by a rise to 88 in the index, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have remained static at 78. This disparity underscores the need for targeted support mechanisms for SMEs to enhance their resilience amidst ongoing market volatility.

A significant 55.6% of surveyed companies reported adjustments to their operational plans due to uncertainties stemming from geopolitical events. Adjustments in pricing, supply procurement, and operational costs reflect a restructuring of strategies that can affect consumer pricing dynamics and distributor relationships, thus warranting close monitoring by investors.

According to Kang Min-jae, the economic policy team leader of the Korean Chamber of Commerce, while improvements in manufacturing sentiment are noted, existing challenges from high prices and exchange rate fluctuations necessitate government intervention to stabilize resource procurement and mitigate corporate burdens. This situation signals an urgent need for strategic partnerships between government bodies and the private sector to enhance economic resilience in the beauty industry and beyond.
