From July 2 to 4, the K-Culture Expo was held at the National Convention Center in Hanoi, a pioneering initiative led by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA). The event represented a significant B2B2C marketing effort, culminating in record contracts totaling $33.26 million, thus highlighting Vietnam's position as a crucial market for Korean consumer goods.

Vietnam is one of South Korea's top three trading partners and one of the top four destinations for consumer goods exports. With a population of 100 million and a median age of 33, the country has shown robust economic growth, with GDP growth rates sitting between 7% and 8% in the last two years. This youthful demographic is increasingly familiar with K-culture, as 99.4% of respondents indicated having consumed Korean products or services, amplifying the market potential for Korean brands.

The traction for Korean consumer goods is supported by a heightened consumer preference for trust and premium products, particularly in light of recent food safety scandals in Vietnam. This shift presents a timely opportunity for Korean companies to tailor their offerings towards this evolving consumer mindset. Additionally, recent diplomatic engagements between the two countries have invigorated business collaborations and investments, further catalyzing demand.

In terms of export numbers, Korean consumer goods are on a steep upward trajectory, with the first five months of 2023 recording a year-on-year increase of 11.9%, surpassing $20.4 billion. Predictions indicate that by 2025, the exports of major categories including food and cosmetics will exceed $10 billion, $4 billion, and $7 billion respectively. This potential indicates not just a sales opportunity but a chance to integrate K-culture within everyday consumer experiences.

The 27th edition of the K-Culture Expo marked a landmark collaboration among KOTRA, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, and the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT), focusing on both consumer goods and cultural exports. The exhibit attracted over 380 companies, including 107 Korean firms and more than 280 buyers from Vietnam and neighboring countries, drawing approximately 20,000 attendees. This diverse participation exemplifies the event's role as a platform for both product showcase and partnership building.

During the two-day B2B consultation sessions, K-Consumer Goods firms represented 107 exhibitors and engaged in over 1,512 meetings with buyers. The interest from buyers, amid active discussions, reinforces the rising need for trusted Korean brands—a narrative that can boost business resilience and retention strategies.

Notably, the participation of distribution network giants such as Shinsegae, E-Mart, and Musinsa, alongside local retailers like K-Market and Sammi Shop, signals a move toward omnichannel retail strategies to enhance consumer reach. According to a KOTRA representative, leveraging these partnerships allows consumer goods companies to amplify their market impact efficiently and cost-effectively.

KOTRA CEO Kang Kyung-sik emphasized that the evolution toward premium consumer goods is ongoing, especially in rapidly growing markets like Vietnam. The government's initiative to integrate consumer goods into the top 20 export categories reflects a structured approach to enhancing Korean brand visibility in the international arena. As K-Consumer Goods continue to intertwine with cultural exports, a virtuous cycle for export growth is anticipated.
