Cosmax Enters Japan’s Beauty Market with AI-Driven Customization
On the 13th, Cosmax announced that it has established a joint venture, Trinex, with Fujishin, a prominent Japanese beauty distributor. This partnership aims to integrate Cosmax’s AI-driven customization technology with Fujishin's extensive local distribution network, facilitating a tailored cosmetics business model in Japan. This initiative not only signifies the advancement of Cosmax's offshore strategy but also lays the groundwork for further global expansion in the customized cosmetics segment.
Fujishin, founded in 1956, operates a robust offline distribution network servicing approximately 20,000 beauty salons across Japan, providing hair care, skincare, and beauty equipment. This extensive reach underscores Fujishin’s position as a key player in the Japanese beauty market, further enhancing the joint venture’s operational efficacy.
The name Trinex—derived from “Trinity Next”—reflects the collaborative effort between Cosmax, salons, and Fujishin to pioneer the next generation of customized beauty products. With Cosmax holding a 51% stake and Fujishin at 49%, both parties are strategically positioned to leverage their unique strengths in this new venture.
Through Trinex, the plan is to merge Cosmax's AI capabilities in customization with Fujishin's salon distribution network. Cosmax is responsible for product planning and production management, while Fujishin will oversee marketing, distribution, and sales. This division of responsibilities is designed to enhance operational efficiency and scale as the customization model is duplicated in other markets.
The establishment of this joint venture is particularly significant as it follows Cosmax's launch of a customized cosmetics platform in 2023. The AI-driven system has already amassed over 2 million consumer data points through one-on-one consultations, laying a solid foundation for adapting their business model to meet diverse consumer needs in international markets.
Cosmax has identified Japan as an optimal entry point based on the market's readiness for an offline-based customized prescription and subscription model. Consumers in Japan are receptive to premium beauty services, and there is a strong trust relationship between beauty professionals and clients, which may facilitate the acceptance of this novel business model.
As the operational framework takes shape, Trinex plans to establish a cyclical system involving AI assessments, in-salon diagnoses, custom manufacturing, and feedback analysis. Cosmax manufactures products based on diagnostic results from hair and scalp evaluations conducted by beauty professionals, while Fujishin manages localization of filling, packaging, and delivery. The continual collection of customer feedback post-use will further refine the prescription algorithms, thereby enhancing the accuracy and effectiveness of tailored products.
This structure critically supports the competitive edge of customized cosmetics by fostering data accumulation and prescription precision. The salon environment permits repeated assessments and consultations, promoting recurring prescriptions and potentially subscription-based consumer behavior. Cosmax aims to elevate the commercialization of its tailored cosmetics through operational experience gained in Japan, establishing a model for future global market penetration.
This joint venture transcends traditional ODM operations by exporting the entire customized cosmetics operational model rather than merely product sales. By combining AI prescriptions, production, distribution, and customer feedback, Cosmax is strategically positioned to foster a competitive advantage within the global customized cosmetics market.
Industry experts note a growing optimism for customized cosmetics amidst advancements in AI technology, increasing consumer demand for personalization, and a rising appetite for premium beauty services. Leveraging its operational experiences in Japan, Cosmax plans to replicate this model in key markets like the U.S. and Italy, aiming to lead the global customized cosmetics sector. Lee Byung-joo, CEO of Cosmax BTI, emphasized the importance of combining AI-driven prescription technology with local distribution capabilities to directly implement their customized cosmetics model in international markets, establishing a new standard for the future of beauty.
