Cosmax, the world’s leading cosmetics ODM company, announced on the 13th that it has entered into a joint venture with Fujishin, a prominent Japanese beauty distributor, to drive the overseas expansion of its personalized cosmetics business. This collaboration aims to implement a business model that combines AI-based formulation technology with local distribution infrastructure specifically tailored for the Japanese market.

Fujishin, established in 1956 and recognized as a significant player in Japan’s beauty distribution sector, boasts a robust offline network supplying hair care, skin care, and beauty devices to approximately 20,000 salons nationwide. Their strong market presence and distribution capabilities position them as an invaluable partner in localizing Cosmax’s innovative offerings.

The joint venture, named Trinex—short for “Trinity Next”—symbolizes the collaboration between Cosmax, salons, and Fujishin to pioneer the next-generation personalized cosmetics market. Cosmax will maintain a 51% stake in Trinex, while Fujishin holds the remaining 49%, reflecting a collaborative governance structure conducive to mutual growth and localized strategy development.

Through Trinex, the synergy of Cosmax's AI-driven formulation and Fujishin's salon distribution network will forge a unique local business model. Cosmax will oversee product planning and production management, while Fujishin will handle marketing, distribution, and sales. This strategic operation not only diversifies Cosmax’s offerings but also enhances its engagement with local beauty professionals, optimizing the consumer experience.

The establishment of this joint venture is particularly significant following Cosmax's introduction of its personalized cosmetics platform, 3WAAU, which, since inception, has accumulated over 2 million consumer data points via AI consultations. The development of a refined, user-friendly customization system aimed at the global market, branded BYNIQ, indicates a commitment to leveraging data and insights in product formulation.

Cosmax’s choice of Japan as its initial entry point into international markets is strategic, given the country’s pronounced consumer acceptance of premium beauty services and the robust trust relationship between beauticians and their clientele. This backdrop makes Japan an ideal environment for implementing a salon-centric personalized cosmetics model, further supported by the local demand for tailored beauty solutions.

Trinex will utilize a cyclical process involving AI consultations, in-salon diagnoses, personalized manufacturing, and feedback mechanisms to solidify its position within Japan's beauty landscape. Professional beauticians will assess customer scalp and hair conditions, which will then be processed through AI to generate tailored product recommendations, while Cosmax manages production based on this data, ensuring an agile and responsive supply chain.

This operational structure enhances the core competitiveness of personalized cosmetics by enabling ongoing data accumulation and formulation precision. By establishing points of continuous observation and consultation within salons, Cosmax anticipates transforming single-instance purchases into repeated prescriptions and subscription-based buying behaviors, ultimately fortifying customer retention and lifetime value.

The joint venture represents a significant evolution for Cosmax beyond its traditional ODM business model, as it embeds the entire operational mechanism of personalized cosmetics—encompassing AI-driven formulation, production, distribution, and customer feedback—within local markets. This methodology is expected to cultivate competitive advantages in the global personalized cosmetics arena.

Industry experts note the growing expectations for the personalized cosmetics market, fueled by advancements in AI technology and rising demand for premium beauty services. Cosmax plans to leverage its operational insights from Japan to scale this model into key markets such as the United States and Italy, positioning itself as a leader in the global personalized cosmetics domain.

Lee Byung-ju, CEO of Cosmax BHT, stated, “This joint venture is the first practical implementation of our AI-driven personalized formulation technology in international markets, utilizing the local distribution capabilities. Our aim is to continuously enhance our prescription competitiveness based on the rich data accumulated through salons, thereby setting a new standard in the personalized cosmetics sector globally.”
