Neopharm Publishes Study Demonstrating AMPamide’s Efficacy in Scalp Health

Neopharm, led by CEO Kim Yang-su, has announced the publication of a research study on its non-steroidal ingredient AMPamideTM in the prestigious dermatological journal, Annals of Dermatology. This study focuses on the clinical efficacy and changes in the scalp microbiome induced by Neopharm's Zeriod Root Heal Mild Shampoo, which incorporates AMPamide.

The study, titled ‘Clinical Efficacy and Scalp Microbiome Changes Induced by AMPamide-Containing Shampoo in Patients With Seborrheic Dermatitis,’ was conducted in collaboration with researchers from Neopharm's research center, Konkuk University Medical School's Department of Dermatology, and Chung-Ang University’s Department of Systems Biomedical Science. It analyzed the clinical benefits and microbiome changes in patients with seborrheic dermatitis using AMPamide-enriched shampoo.

In the study, 30 adult participants with seborrheic dermatitis were instructed to use Zeriod Root Heal Mild Shampoo five times a week for four weeks. Comparisons were made regarding clinical symptoms and scalp conditions before and after usage. Results indicated a significant reduction in average scalp sebum levels from 127.06 to 66.52, representing nearly a 48% decrease. Additionally, the Clinical Severity Score, which combines measures of erythema, dandruff, itching, and lesion area, decreased from 7.17 to 3.60, approximately a 50% reduction.

The analysis of the scalp microbiome revealed that while bacterial populations remained generally stable, fungal diversity increased. Notably, Malassezia restricta, commonly found in lesions of seborrheic dermatitis, decreased, whereas Malassezia globosa, which is often found in healthy scalps, increased, indicating a more balanced scalp microbiome.

Neopharm articulated that these findings underscore the importance of comprehensive scalp care, moving beyond merely washing away dandruff to considering sebum, inflammatory responses, and the scalp microbiome. Future validation studies taking diverse scalp characteristics into account are anticipated to provide a broader understanding of the environmental changes associated with AMPamide.

AMPamide, developed by Neopharm in August 2020, is recognized for supporting hydration, conditioning the skin barrier, and soothing properties. Furthermore, the ingredient gained global market competitiveness after completing the registration process with the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) in China last year.
