Amorepacific Museum to Host Solo Exhibition of Sol LeWitt

The Amorepacific Museum of Art (Director Jeon Seung-chang) will open the solo exhibition titled "Sol LeWitt: Open Structure" starting September 1. This marks the first large-scale presentation of the artist's work in South Korea, featuring 45 pieces that include wall drawings, structures, paintings, photographs, prints, and archives, providing a comprehensive view of LeWitt's artistic universe.

Sol LeWitt, a pioneer in conceptual art, emphasized the importance of ideas and concepts in art since the 1960s. He explored how a single idea could take various forms using basic geometric elements such as lines, grids, and cubes, significantly influencing the development of conceptual art.

The exhibition presents LeWitt's work from multiple perspectives, featuring 13 wall drawings alongside various structures, paintings, prints, photographs, and archives. It highlights the process of transforming a single idea into diverse media and forms, from the artist's early structural works to his later color-based pieces. Notably, the wall drawings, which utilize the wall as a canvas to depict lines, colors, and geometric shapes, are recreated in accordance with the artist's instructions tailored to the exhibition space.

The creation of the wall drawings involved collaboration with 23 participants from the "APMA MAKERS" program, comprised of students specializing in fine arts from local universities. These participants interpreted the artist's instructions, layering lines and colors to experience the process of making art firsthand. Following the exhibition's opening, the Amorepacific Museum of Art plans to offer various programs to deepen visitor engagement with the artist's oeuvre. These initiatives will include lectures and other engaging content that explore LeWitt's ideas, methods, and the significance of conceptual art.

This exhibition is based on a touring show that began at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT) and is realized through collaboration with The LeWitt Estate, expanding upon the existing exhibition framework at the Amorepacific Museum of Art.
