The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), led by Oh Yu-kyung, announced on the 10th a campaign aimed at educating the public on optimal sunscreen usage in response to heightened UV exposure during the summer months. This guidance is critical as consumer awareness around skincare products continues to grow, influencing purchasing decisions and brand loyalty.

As functional cosmetics, sunscreens are indicated for their ability to protect the skin from UV rays, thereby aiding in the prevention of pigmentation and photo-aging. Consumers are encouraged to verify whether their chosen products bear the MFDS-approved ‘functional cosmetics’ label, connecting regulatory validation to enhanced consumer confidence and potential revenue for compliant brands.

Given the peak UV exposure periods, consumers are advised to minimize outdoor activities and employ supplementary protective measures such as long-sleeved clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses. This behavior reflects a proactive approach to skin health, which is becoming increasingly integrated into consumer purchasing psychology and could encourage brands to expand their protective product lines.

It is vital for users to apply sunscreen evenly on the skin approximately 15 minutes prior to sun exposure and to reapply frequently, particularly after sweating or prolonged sun exposure. This highlights a significant consumer behavior towards short-term product utilization that can enhance recurring purchase patterns as customers seek products that offer long-lasting protection.

In evaluating sunscreen products, consumers should check both the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) and the PA grade. While SPF provides a quantifiable measure of UVB protection up to 50, higher numbers do not necessarily equate to proportionately superior protection. This dynamic presents a unique opportunity for brands to educate consumers on the nuances of UV protection, thereby shaping informed purchasing behaviors.

Furthermore, while products with higher SPF and PA ratings offer increased protection, they may also cause skin irritations depending on the individual’s skin type and condition. Therefore, understanding customer needs and preferences becomes crucial for brands aiming to optimize product fit and minimize adverse reactions.

For water-based activities, it is advised to use ‘water-resistant’ or ‘long-lasting water-resistant’ formulations, as conventional products may easily wash off. However, even long-lasting options require reapplication every two hours during extensive water exposure, creating additional engagement points for brands to encourage customer loyalty through education on correct usage practices.

Ultimate safety precautions include ensuring that the product does not come into contact with the eyes or mouth, especially for spray formulations. Advising consumers on best practices for application may further enhance customer satisfaction and brand reputation. The MFDS has committed to strengthening quality and safety regulations surrounding cosmetic products in daily use to foster consumer trust and adherence in the competitive beauty landscape.
