JD Group, China's largest e-commerce firm, has established a sourcing entity in South Korea as of June 18, with the intention toaccelerate imports of high-quality Korean consumer goods targeting the Chinese market.

In line with the establishment of the JD Group's purchasing entity, KOTRA (Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency) invited JD's purchasing group to a briefing and consultation event on August 12 at KOTRA's headquarters.

While the export of Korean consumer goods had seen a decline post-pandemic, momentum picked up in the first half of this year following the APEC summit in Gyeongju last November, with a broad increase in the five major consumer goods exports.

This rebound can be attributed to the expansion of collaborations with major Chinese distribution networks like JD, Douyin, and Alibaba. Additionally, domestic platforms like Musinsa are increasingly entering the Chinese market, signifying a mature diversification of cooperation between businesses from both countries. The Korean companies' responsive adaptation to evolving consumer trends in China—characterized by a shift towards 'cost-performance ratio' considerations, an aging population, and the growth of online shopping—has also played a pivotal role.

China's consumer market is undergoing rapid online transformation. While online retail accounted for 30% of the total retail share in 2020, this figure climbed to over 44% in the first half of this year, nearing half of the retail market. In response, KOTRA is focusing on supporting large online distribution chains to directly purchase Korean products, complementing collaboration with existing intermediary vendors. This direct purchasing method offers stability for prolonged product sales compared to intermediary routes.

The purchasing delegation from JD Group, which includes several senior officials with actual purchasing authority, underscores that the expansion of K-consumer goods procurement is progressing quickly.

The briefing session led by JD Group representatives garnered participation from over 200 K-consumer goods companies, enhancing engagement. Notably, 54 companies selected by JD in collaboration with KOTRA participated in one-on-one purchasing consultations, resulting in 54 distinct inquiries.

Kim Min-hwa, head of JD.COM Korea, stated, "K-consumer goods are increasingly being sold on JD.com due to their excellent quality and product appeal." He added that JD has already established a logistics corporation in Korea to provide various logistics solutions including import/export, bonded warehousing, and individual shipments, expressing a desire to collaborate with KOTRA to discover more outstanding K-consumer goods firms for export.

During the event, JD also finalized purchase contracts worth $1.5 million with nine K-consumer goods companies. Kim Sung-jun, CEO of Reclow Co., stated satisfaction that smaller companies can now resolve logistics and payment challenges by directly entering the JD platform.

Reclow’s fashion products will be introduced through a direct purchasing approach, with an opening of a Self Operated Flagship Store on JD.com.

Additionally, representatives from LLOYD indicated that through JD's direct purchasing and the operation of official brand stores, operational burdens in entering the Chinese market regarding inventory, logistics, and payments have been greatly reduced. They expressed a commitment to providing quality products at reasonable prices to JD platform users.

Following the briefing session, JD expressed its intention to expand the 'K-consumer goods exclusive section' on JD.com and collaborate with KOTRA to systematically identify promising K-consumer goods firms for entry.

KOTRA President Kang Kyung-sung remarked on the necessity of collaboration with local major platforms to effectively enter the evolving Chinese market affected by online growth, urbanization, and an aging population. He assured support for K-consumer goods companies to effectively advance into overseas markets through partnerships with major national distribution networks.
