Revised Cosmetics Act Expected to Boost K-Beauty Competitiveness

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), led by Oh Yu-kyung, announced that four legislative amendments, including revisions to the 'Cosmetics Act' and 'Medical Devices Act', were passed by the National Assembly on August 20.

With the revision of the Cosmetics Act, the MFDS can now establish and implement a Basic Plan for Cosmetics Management focused on safety management, regulatory support, and international cooperation. This will also facilitate the establishment and operation of a Cosmetics Management Council for discussions on related matters.

The passage of this amendment is expected to enhance the global competitiveness of K-beauty through systematic policy formulation and support for the industry.

Additionally, the legislative amendments that passed include revisions to the 'Medical Devices Act', the 'Special Act on the Management of Imported Foods', and the 'Act on the Control of Narcotics'.

With changes to the Medical Devices Act, monitoring of advertisements and labeling for medical devices sold online will improve, and necessary actions can be taken against violating suppliers.

The amended Special Act on the Management of Imported Foods introduces penalties for falsely extending the validity of overseas manufacturing facilities, including the cancellation of their registration.

The revision of the Narcotics Control Act provides legal grounds for the Minister of Health and Welfare to request integrated information management for narcotics from the MFDS when post-management is needed.

The MFDS plans to continue enhancing safety management for food and medical products closely related to public health and safety, prioritizing public safety and adapting regulatory frameworks to reflect changing societal conditions, thereby strengthening the global competitiveness of its responsible products.
